ELA GRADE WEIGHTING: HW=10% QUIZZES=40% TESTS=50%
1. How can I access my child's core class grades?
Go to the Parent Portal and use the district-mailed codes to set up your account. You will be able to access your child's grades 24/7. It is much more proactive to check in weekly than to wait for the five week progress report. This will also give you a chance to talk to your child about his/her progress before grades are finalized on the quarterly report card.
2. What do I do if I have trouble setting up or using my Parent Portal account?
-Contact Yvonne Koulikov.
3. Does my child have homework?
Click the HOMEWORK link to see assignments. Check the site daily for possible changes and updates. Please remind your child to use his/her planner, and please check to see if he/she is using it every day.
4. What is your homework policy?
>Credit is earned for homework that is neat, complete, on time, with the student in class on the day it is due, and done in earnest.
>Homework not meeting the above requirements will not be accepted for credit.
>Students will earn a homework check even if answers are incorrect, provided that answers are not mostly frivolous.
>If students are absent, they have the day following their return to get the homework in. However, we encourage students to use our web resources while out. If they are able to complete any work while absent, it reduces the stress caused by having to make up work for all classes.
>I automatically drop one HW zero each quarter.
5. My child says he/she has no homework because it was done in advisory. Is that possible?
While we don't assign hours of HW, it is not likely that ALL homework is getting done EVERY DAY in school. You can use the Parent Portal to verify if your child is turning in his/her HW.
6. My child did his/her homework, so why does the Parent Portal show a zero?
I enter a grade of zero when...
...the homework is incomplete, too sloppy to read, or not with your child in class when I check it in (late).
...a child is absent on the day it is due. If he/she doesn't present the work upon returning, the zero will stand. Otherwise, the grade will be modified the next time I do an update.
7. What does the "E" mean?
E = excused. Homework will be excused if it is canceled (if students demonstrate proficiency, extra practice may not be needed), or if they turn in an earned HW pass. I also drop one homework zero automatically every quarter.
8. Are there exceptions to the homework rules?
Yes. Under extenuating circumstances, we will make allowances and/or modify the requirements. Please have your child speak with us privately to let us know if there are serious difficulties impacting his/her progress. However, under normal circumstances, we do not take late, incomplete, or sloppy work.
9. My child will be missing school due to an upcoming (vacation / medical requirement). Can you provide the homework in advance?
>As per our school policy, students are not entitled to advance work before illegal absences. However, if we have ample notice and are able, we will accommodate your child before his or her vacation.
>Students should check the HW website in order to access assignments.
>In the case of extended leave due to medical requirements, please contact us so we can formulate a plan and modify the work if applicable or necessary.
10. Do you offer extra credit?
This varies by teacher, but students may earn bonus coupons or homework passes in some classes for enrichment work. Students will not have the option to do "extra" work in lieu of regular classroom work; however, students may consult with me about potential projects if they have concerns over test or quiz grades and they are interested in working toward improving their average. Please note, these projects are extensive and only exemplary work will be accepted. Further, because of honors criteria, no bonus points will be added to tests.
